Japan is famous for sushi and green tea, but a lesser-known fact about the country is that the people there really love dressing up. This goes way beyond a love for kimonos and other fancy traditional clothes. In 2016, the country’s Prime Minister made headlines by making an appearance at the Summer Olympics dressed as Mario. When it comes to the general population, some of the more popular choices include characters from famous anime shows, gothic “Lolitas”, and… pigeons?

It’s just another day on this tree-lined street in Tokyo, except for the fact that there are eight people wearing matching pigeon masks parading down the sidewalk. It’s hard to know what to make of this situation – are the people on their way to an obscure Japanese pigeon festival? Was the photo op a random coincidence or was it arranged ahead of time? None of the pigeon-head people are holding their bags or their jackets, making it seem like they could be posing for a pre-planned photo.

However, maybe we shouldn’t be so suspicious. There’s still a good chance that this group of friends were just taking place in an activity that was perfectly normal for them! No matter what, there’s one thing we can be sure of. The Google employee who got this shot must consider the occasion to be one of his best days at work ever. Let’s just hope this photo doesn’t freak out any people who suffer from a phobia of birds!
